Theatre in the X is excited to bring back its Staged Reading series in 2024! This year all of our featured playwrights are OG members of the Philadelphia theater community and we’re excited to showcase their stories. Each reading will showcase a staged reading performance of a play, a talk-back with the playwright, and food!

About the playwright:
Karen "Magic Fingaz" Smith, Brooklyn Native, Philly Resident, is a Professional Percussionist, Playwright, Poet, Director, Teaching Artist, Curator and now Pie-Maker!!! Karen is a recipient of several grants including Leeway Foundation's Art and Change, Pennsylvania Council of the Arts and Illuminate the Arts Grants . Ms. Smith is the Founder, Artistic Director and Lead Percussionist of Sistahs Laying Down Hands Collective and The Karen Smith Experience (formerly known as Weez the Peeples Collective). Called "Sounds of Freedom" by Philadelphia Inquirer, Ms. Smith has worked with many individual artists, groups, theatrical production companies, studio recordings, has written for three book collectives and this past October, curated the "Breastival Festival" in collaboration with The Penn Medicine Breast Cancer Research and Breast Cancer Surgeon, Dr. Monique Gary, a week long of events centered around Breast Cancer Awareness and utilizing the various genres of the arts as resource tools. As of August 1, 2023, I’m delighted to share that I’ve received a Pew Fellowship from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage!! "Collaborations are the essence of my creative Journey and I am sure so many to come. "It definitely feel like a highlight sharing OMAZING energies with my Theatre in the X Family!! KUUMBA!! Possible is Possible is my daily mantra!"
